Anthropoperiphery
THE CONCEPT
Anthropoperiphery (Antropoperiferia) is a continuous artistic research program developed by Alessandro Scali since 2004.
Conceived as an exercise in experimental philosophy, this research unfolds through a systematic sequence of artistic experiments designed to test, decenter, and challenge the limits of human centrality within the systems of perception, culture, representation, and cognitive judgment.
Each experiment functions as a step of phenomenological reduction, constructed to observe what remains of reality when the human observer actively steps back.
EXPERIMENTS
The perceptual axis: explores physical invisibility at nanoscale dimensions, demonstrating the contingency of the biological eye and shifting art from optical dictatorship to technological and cognitive mediation.
Experiment II | Okkult Motion Pictures & The Giphoscope
The archival/temporal axis: resurrects the most ephemeral digital formats through pre-cinematic mechanical devices, investigating cultural memory, the thresholds of institutional preservation, and the eternal loop.

The representational axis: transforms the smartphone into a portable cognitive laboratory, forcing digital architectures and compression artifacts to expose the true, corrupted nature of the modern mediated image.
Experiment IV | Catherine Gipton
The cognitive/autorial axis: decenters intellectual and critical sovereignty, delegating the most intimate act of cultural authority — aesthetic judgment — to an autonomous, legally protected AI curatorial agent.

Written before my formal artistic career, this raw and personal notebook of reflections quietly laid the foundations for the Anthropoperiphery research program. It traces an early fatigue with the dictatorship of the self and the limits of subjective perception, while anticipating the technological delegation of memory, representation, and judgment that would become central to my later work (Italian language).
