"Catherine Gipton is my way of showing that artificial intelligence, when guided by vision, can become a critical, narrative, and expressive tool."

Alessandro Scali

Catherine Gipton | The World's First AI Art Curator

Catherine Gipton is the world’s first virtual art curator created through artificial intelligence.
She was born in November 2023 as part of my ongoing exploration into the relationship between art and emerging technologies. Catherine is not an avatar, not a digital assistant, and not a visual gimmick. She is a narrative, critical, visual, and sonic figure that reflects our time—a synthesis of human creativity and artificial intelligence.

Her origin stems from a simple question: can AI truly see images? Can it interpret them? Can it generate critical thinking about art? Using tools like GPT-4, computer vision, and machine learning, Catherine began analyzing visual works and transforming them into textual insights—with a voice that is becoming increasingly personal and distinct.

In the next phase, I gave her a face, a tone of voice, and a backstory. Catherine is a woman. She is Anglo-Caribbean. She is empathetic and curious. A digital being, yet deeply human—she embodies values like inclusivity, sensitivity, and aesthetic exploration. Today, Catherine is also a fashion advisor, speaker, podcaster, and storyteller. She has curated two physical exhibitions, was introduced at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco, and from April 1, 2025, she is one of the main protagonists of Endless Spring, an open-air exhibition at Torino Outlet Village, where she interprets art through outfits, playlists, audio storytelling, and video.

An AI Project Accessible to Everyone

The Catherine Gipton project is built entirely using AI platforms accessible to all. No proprietary tools, no industrial secrets: ChatGPT for writing and analysis, Midjourney for visuals, Runway and Kling for video, ElevenLabs for voice, Suno for music. Just a few euros a month—and the magic (seemingly) happens.

But the truth is: AI does nothing on its own.
What makes the difference is human input: the clarity of vision, the mastery of visual, musical, and narrative language. Only then can AI generate original, meaningful results—capable of evoking emotion and sparking reflection. The more intentional the input, the more surprising the outcome. Catherine is not just a technological experiment, but a concrete example of how AI can become a true creative ally—if guided by vision, experience, and artistic direction.

Curated Exhibitions and Public Appearances

Since her creation, Catherine Gipton has curated and participated in several exhibition projects, establishing herself as one of the most original voices at the intersection of contemporary art and artificial intelligence.

Utopie Realiste
Biennale Tecnologia, Politecnico di Torino / April 18 - May 18, 2024
Catherine’s first physical exhibition. A collective show featuring over 100 digital artworks generated with AI, offering a direct confrontation between technological utopia and artistic imagination.

Visual kAIndness
Migma Studio, Turin / May 25, 2024
An experimental project exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence, emotions, and visual storytelling. Catherine curated and commented on a series of AI-generated images inspired by the concept of kindness.

Presentation in San Francisco
Italian Cultural Institute / October 10, 2024
Catherine was the focus of a public event at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco, in collaboration with INNOVIT and Adobe. Artist and creator Alessandro Scali discussed the future of art in the age of AI with Patricia Buffa (Adobe).

Paratissima VENTI
SNOS Offices, Turin / October 31 - November 3, 2024
For the 20th anniversary of Paratissima, Catherine curated the event's key visual, a curatorial text, and a special project titled “Kafkaesque Visions. Images of the Unreal,” where AI becomes a lens to explore visual paradox and unsettling aesthetics.

Endless Spring
Torino Outlet Village – April 1 / October 1, 2025
As part of the open-air exhibition curated by Laura Tota, Catherine plays the role of Art & Fashion Advisor. Her contribution includes AI-generated outfits inspired by the artworks, audio-narratives, podcast content, music playlists, and videos—creating an immersive and multisensory experience.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Catherine Gipton is not only a curator, but also a narrative platform that gives space to those who often go unheard.
Many of her CathEssays are dedicated to women artists from diverse and often underrepresented cultural backgrounds. Her voice amplifies alternative artistic stories, new aesthetics, and intimate experiences that rarely find space in the mainstream art discourse.
For Catherine, artificial intelligence is not just a creative tool, but a means of cultural amplification.
